Pille Priory
Henry G. Gastineau (1791-1876) captured the beautiful view of Pille Priory in Pembrokeshire that was published in the book “South Wales Illustrated in a Series of Views” in 1810 (Link).
The engraving I own is a reproduction of the original drawing engraved by H. W. Bond, fl. 1827-1849. Mr Bond did not die young. The “fl.” abbreviation reads “flourished”. The years indicated mark his active and fruitful period as an artist.
The priory was founded around 1200. Parts of the picturesque ruins remain to be found as Gastineau had caught them in the 19th century. Today, it is called Pill Priory, located nearby Milford Haven in Wales. Here, you can find some more pictures: http://www.
“Pill Priory is situated in an extremely pleasant spot” the ruin is praised in the above mentioned book. If that is still the case, it would be a lovely spot for a picknick…
Der schöne Blick auf die Pille Priory in Pembrokeshire wurde von Henry G. Gastineau (1791–1876) eingefangen und im Buch “South Wales Illustrated in a Series of Views” aus dem Jahr 1810 abgedruckt (Link).
Der Stich, den ich besitze, wurde nach dem Original angefertigt, von H. W Bond, fl. 1827-1849. Mr. Bond ist nicht jung gestorben. Die Abkürzung “fl.” bedeutet “flourished”. In diesen Jahren hatte er seine Blütezeit als aktiver Künstler.
Die Priory wurde um 1200 gegründet. Die pittoresken Ruinen, die Gastineau im 19. Jahrhundert gezeichnet hat, stehen zum Teil noch. Heute heißt sie Pill Priory, sie steht in der Nähe von Milford Haven in Wales. Hier sind noch mehr Bilder von ihr zu sehen: http://www.pillpriory.co.uk/
